Niche Audience Social Networking Sites – Created especially to attract niche audience, whether a particular age group or interest/hobby, these niche audience Social Networking Sites are rapidly gaining popularity and populating the virtual space fast. Examples include Sobercircle (a networking site that is for people who are trying to kick their addictions), MyArtInfo (a niche social networking site for artists). The biggest advantage of a niche audience social networking site is that it offers you a good chance to grow as an individual and learn more about your field of work besides make friends with those who share similar interests as yours. However, such a social networking platform may not present itself as a viable option in the long run.

Business Networking Sites – These sites help you create your meet people who belong to the same industry as you. Increasingly, business networking sites are being considered as a good way to networking with professionals located in different parts of the world and offer your expertise and experience for their businesses if the demand presents itself. Examples include LinkedIn, Ryze.com. The biggest advantage of these networks is that they help you connect with those who can offer you a better work opportunity or even a business opportunity based on your profile and skill sets.

So, the bottom line is that you must choose wisely. Making the right choice is possible if you do your homework and background check prudently. Always study and compare the various benefits, privacy, copyright, and security measures taken by these websites before you sit down to fill the membership form and click ‘Submit’. Start slow, and keep in mind that it’s better to be deeply involved and active on one social networking site rather than have multiple profiles and fall an easy prey to the virtual predators that are creating mayhem in the virtual space.

The importance of social networking sites have increased tenfold especially after they got to be recognized as sites that were very useful from the business point of view. In fact the business decision makers are also using the social networking sites as a two way dialog and a channel that are very similar to social networking applications. The medium of advertising through these sites has proved to be far more effective than traditional methods of promotion. You can also start identifying members who share common interests with you and your business. In fact, social sites like Linked In are being increasingly used by job seekers to post their profiles and get picked by the top companies or recruiting agents. Users can also connect to each other so that they can share their resources for finding jobs. Some users may also share tips on how to appear for an interview, how to win the heart of the interviewer, etc. Members of a social networking sites create their profile and then join the communities that they like. Hence people from different fields or even similar fields can increase the community feeling between each other. Also the services of social networking sites can be divided into internal social networking and external social networking sites. In case of internal networking sites there are private communities that include a group of people within a company or an organization who can communicate only with authorized people in the group. On the other end, an open network is a public network where anyone can join in as a member and communicate with other members. All social networks have some sort of privacy controls that allows the user to choose as to what parts of the profile the other member can see. Many social sites are created purely for the benefits of the members such as Gurgle that has topics covered under pregnancy, birth of the child and bringing up children. Social sites today have become so important for an individual that his social status can also be gauged from his profile. This is because people perceive other people by the way they have provided information and created their profile. People can also be perceived by how popular he is on the social site because of his deeds on the site. The person is able to completely control the information about himself that he wants to show on the site.

All social sites have additional features as well like creating groups and also having the ability to join already existing groups or communities as a member. Members can also upload and download important videos and discuss pretty much anything they want on forums. These sites are now being controlled by open source technologies such as OpenID and OpenSocial.

Online Social Networks Can Make You a Happier, Healthier Person

Happiness is an important component of health. Recent studies found that happiness spreads through social networks, including online networks. Networking with positive, passionate people therefore can have a particularly beneficial effect on your happiness and ultimately health.

The World Health Organization considers happiness to be an important component of health. Happy, optimistic people not only live 8 years longer on average, but they also are healthier. Researchers have identified many of the factors that stimulate happiness (or unhappiness); however – until recently – none of these studies addressed another cause of human happiness… How the happiness and friendliness of one person influences another’s emotional state.

That “communicated happiness” is a significant phenomenon that can be observed every day. For example in a store, when you are greeted with a friendly smile, you are far more inclined to smile back, and above all to make a purchase. The afterglow of such an ephemeral encounter even has the potential to brighten your whole day.

Even more fundamental, a study by the Harvard Medical School and the University of California, San Diego, published in December in BMJ (BMJ 2008;337:a233) suggests that happiness can spread from person to person within a social network and extends up to three degrees of separation (friends of a friend’s friend). People can “catch” positive emotional states they observe in others over time frames ranging from seconds to weeks. Examination of social networks indicates that “happy people” tend to be connected to one another; and the more happy friends you have, the greater your own chance for happiness.

The study, following 4’739 persons over 20 years, concluded that the happiness displayed by someone else during a social contact actually increases by 15% the likelihood of feeling happy oneself! This proves the adage that “Happiness really is contagious”.

Additionally, second-degree contact with a happy person (the friend of a friend) increases the likeliness of increased happiness by 10% and third-degree contact by 6%. There was no impact on fourth-degree contacts.

Contrary to what one might think, social interaction with an unhappy friend has little or no impact on one’s own happiness.

The researchers then went on to examine whether the same was true for online social networks. Following a sample of 1700 students active on Facebook, they found that despite that the interactions took place virtually, our ancient evolutionary psychology apparently does not make a distinction; online social networks seem to spread happiness the same way as do their offline counterparts.

From these observations, it’s only a small step to suggest that networking with people who feel passionately positive about any particular subject will be even more beneficial than just networking in general. That’s because, by definition, such individuals will almost certainly better transmit their own happiness and enthusiasm to others.
